Notes (2010)

File Server

  • CPU: Intel® Xeon® X5680, 3.33Ghz, 12M Cache, Turbo, HT, 1333MHz Max Mem  (Equivalent or Better)

  • ** NOTE: Single CPU for File & Print Services

  • ** NOTE: Dual CPU for virtualization  (IE VMWare)

  • Hard Disk: Three or more drives for striping with parity [Raid Level 5/5.1 or 6]

  • Type 15K RPM Self-Encrypting SA SCSI 6Gbps

  • ** NOTE: Self-Encrypting Drives provide encryption at rest.

  • Size: Using three 600GB or larger drives, delivers 1.2TB of storage; figure 1 megabyte (MB) per 25 claims (excluding media) plus 2GB (2,000 MB) for system use.

  • SCSI: High performance controller with hardware based raid; cache for improved performance

  • RAM: 8GB - 16GB [Or more!]

Base Software

OS:   ** Note: Check with your System Provider for OS preference.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2, Standard Edition (64 Bit) or higher.

  • Backup: Should be Server, NAS based and Internet

  • Type: Digital

  • Size: Should be larger than hard disk

  • Windows Server 2008: Note: Please make certain to fully patch this version of Windows, as there are important data integrity issues with SMB and the official release of the product.

Network Hardware

  • Cards: 10/100/1000 Ethernet Cards. [Remember to use Cat 6 cables for your servers.]

  • ** NOTE: GB Ethernet cards significantly improve performance.

  • Hubs: Do not use hubs for your networking.

  • Switch: 10/100/1000 – A good Layer 3 switch will significantly improve your network performance and reliability. Your office is not too small to require a switch.

Other Software

  • Corel WordPerfect 9/10/11/12/X3/X4/X5/X6

  • Microsoft Excel/Office 2007 or higher

  • Windows 7 / Windows 8.1

NAS Device [Backups]

  • CPU: Intel® Xeon® E5620 2.4Ghz, 12M Cache, Turbo, HT, 1066MHz Max Mem  (Equivalent or Better)

  • Hard Disk: Three or more drives for striping with parity [Raid Level 5/5.1 or 6]

  • Type: Self-Encrypting for Encryption at rest.

  • Size: 600GB SATA or SCSI Drives (x 3 or more)

  • RAM: 4GB - 8GB [Or more!]

  • OS: Microsoft Windows 2008 Storage Server or Linux

  • Backup: As this device is intended to be used for backups, backup software and a tape backup for offsite storage is appropriate.

Printers

  • HP 4000/8000 Series Laser Printers

  • HP Jet Direct network cards for all networked laser printers

  • One narrow carriage dot matrix for labels

  • One local HP Laser for check printing

Primary Workstations This description is for the "power users" in the office.

  • CPU: Intel® CoreTM i5 660 (3.33GHz/4MB cache) (Or Better)

  • ** NOTE: Intel Core i7 Quad Core Processor 860 with VT (2.80GHz, 8M) (For Power Users)

  • RAM: 4GB;

  • Monitor: 22+ LCD Monitor with a minimum resolution of 1280x1024 (Or Better)

  • ** NOTE: Dual Monitors may provide additional flexibility

  • OS: Windows 7 (32 Bit) or Windows 8.1.

  • ** NOTE: While Collection-Master is fully compatible with 64 bit systems, many other business applications are not

Other Workstations This description is for the "normal users" on the staff who perform routine tasks.

  • CPU: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E7600 with VT (3.06GHz, 3M, 1066MHz FSB)  (Or Better)

  • RAM: 2GB to 4GB; opt for the higher amount if doing large merges of 2000-plus documents

  • Monitor: 19,22+ LCD Monitor with a minimum resolution of 1280x1024 (Or Better)

  • ** NOTE: Dual Monitors may provide additional flexibility

  • OS: Windows XP Professional or Windows 7 (32 Bit)

  • ** NOTE: While Collection-Master is fully compatible with 64 bit systems, many other business applications are not

Other Servers (Application Servers)

  • Computer that host other server based applications, also called "services," such as Enterprise PIM, fax, e-mail, Internet or Terminal Services

  • CPU: Intel® Xeon® E5620 2.4Ghz, 12M Cache, Turbo, HT, 1066MHz Max Mem  (Equivalent or Better)

  • Hard Disk: Size and performance is determined by software that will occupy disk

  • SCSI: Optional but recommended for alternate server

  • RAM: 8GB to 16GB; opt for the higher amount if several services are used

  • OS: Microsoft Windows 2008 Server  is a very reliable application server

  • Backup: This backup can be included with the main server/NAS backup or done on its own; if the service server's backup is performed on the server itself, additional backup equipment is necessary.

  • Type: Should be server based and digital

  • Size: Should be larger than hard disk

Additional Notes

  • We do recommend replacing systems every 3-4 years.

  • Windows Server 2012, R2 is supported as of September 2012.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2, Standard Edition (64 Bit) or newer. Windows Server 2008 R2 is the oldest recommended operating system.

  • * NOTE: Please make certain to fully patch this version of Windows, as there are important data integrity issues with SMB and the official release of the product.

  • Windows Server 2003 will reach its end-of-life by July 2015.

  • Netware 6.5 is no longer supported by Novell, this has been replaced by Novell Open Enterprise a new product.

  • Microsoft Windows 98, ME, and Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition are designed for home use, and should not be used in an office or professional environment.

  • Microsoft Windows 7 (32 Bit) Professional is recommended for use on workstations.

  • Memory is directly related to performance, more memory improves a workstation's performance. Upgrading to 4MB of memory greatly improves a workstations performance.

  • CPU Speed is also very important. Intel Core i7 Workstations are available.

  • ** NOTE: An Intel Core i7 2.8GHZ system is many times faster than a 3.0GHZ Pentium System!

  • ** NOTE: This sample system is optimized to provide a fast and robust environment.   It is not a "Minimum Hardware Requirement" document, rather a series of recommendations.  Please contact your system consultant for current "state of the art" solutions.

Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 Support Ended April 8th, 2014
Running Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 in your environment after their end of support date may expose your company to potential risks, such as:

Security and Compliance Risks: Unsupported and unpatched environments are vulnerable to security risks. This may result in an officially recognized control failure by an internal or external audit body, leading to suspension of certifications, and/or public notification of the organization’s inability to maintain its systems and customer information.

To ensure you remain on supported versions of Windows and Office, you should begin your planning and application testing immediately to ensure you deploy before end of support. Please go to http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/endofsupport.aspx for additional details.
